An AC produces condensate during cooling, but water escaping into your home needs attention. Drainage problems, a damaged pan, or ice melting from a coil are possible causes. Turn cooling off at the thermostat if safely accessible and arrange an assessment.
Condensation belongs in the drainage system.
Cooling equipment removes moisture from indoor air. That water should be collected and carried away through the system’s drainage arrangement. A puddle beneath indoor equipment, a damp ceiling, or water around the air handler is a different concern from water leaving an intended drain outlet.
Carrier identifies blocked condensate drains, frozen coils, and damaged drain pans among causes of AC water leaks. A wet area alone does not distinguish between them, and cleaning up the visible water does not resolve the source.
Make useful observations from a safe location.
Notice where the moisture first appeared, whether cooling was running, and whether the problem followed a filter change or other work. Tell the technician if cooling performance also changed. A photo taken from a dry, safe area can be useful; there is no need to enter an attic or remove a panel.
- Is water near the equipment, beneath a ceiling, or by a visible drain?
- Does it appear only during cooling?
- Have you noticed ice, weak airflow, or an unexpected shutdown?
- Has the same problem happened before?
Avoid turning a leak into a larger problem.
Stop cooling using the normal thermostat controls when they are safely accessible. Keep away from water near electrical equipment. Do not open equipment, chip away ice, bypass a drain safety switch, or pour chemicals into an unfamiliar drain connection.
If water is spreading through a ceiling or near electrical equipment, describe that urgency when seeking help. For smoke, sparking, or an immediate danger, leave the affected area and contact emergency services.
Ask what the repair addresses.
A useful proposal distinguishes the cause from its consequences. Ask what caused the water to escape, what work is recommended, and how drainage and equipment operation will be checked afterward. If cleaning or additional repairs are separate, clarify that before proceeding.
Keep the findings with your service records. If the problem recurs, the prior diagnosis, date, and repair details help establish what needs another look.
